The national public education was to be extended to nine years in 1968. In order to provide enough teachers for junior and high schools, the Ministry of Education in 1967 encouraged the public universities to create related departments and programs. With its authorization, ¡§ the History Department of the National Chengchi University,¡¨ was therefore established, with Professor Hsu Chia-chi being its first Chairman. The Chair person was continued through Professors Fang Hao, Yan Hsin-hen, Wang Shou-nan, Wu Jun-yi, Chang Jer-lang , Lin Neng-shih , Chou Hui-min, Hsueh Hua-yuan, Pang Ming-fui and Tang Chi-hua to Lu Shao-li, current Chair. In addition to training teachers, the History Department also stresses the significance to produce research specialists. Because of this added responsibility, the Ministry of Education in 1967 charged the department to inaugurate a Graduate School to specialize in the history of modern China and her relationship with the foreign nations. Professor Yan Hsin-hen was its first Chairman. When the graduate program first started, it only offered courses leading to the M.A. degree. In 1968, the Ph.D. program was added to it. The scope of the Graduate School programs has since extended to include the study of Taiwanese history and the political system in Chinese history. Our immediate effort now is to broaden our course offerings to be even more multitudinous. The department now has about 250 undergraduate students and 80 graduate students.
